Below: North of Almagora, a massive Skaven army assembles to assault the city walls.
Below: For the defenders, the strategy would be much the same as it worked against the divided Chaos force earlier. Knights would deploy outside the walls with missile troops, war machines and wizards supporting from above. Even though the obstacles were not as plentiful as on the earlier battlefields, the Skaven found it difficult because of the sheer size of their massing hordes.
Below: "And so it begins..." Massive forces close as missiles and magic attempt to thin the lines.
Below: We discovered the game was too large for the players on hand, as many pre-planned tactics were botched, basic rules interpretations were missed and items/spells that could've been decisive were overlooked. Such is the fog of war. When the Bretonnian force charged the Skaven lines, most of the ratmen buckled.
Below: One decisive and unexpected weapon that the Skaven brought to the field was the bell. Early in the battle, the ringing of the bell sent vibrations rippling down the wall and many sections collapsed; burying Bretonnians and High Elves beneath the rubble. Although the effectiveness of it wasn't repeated, it caused many of the defenders to redeploy off of the wall for fear of another catastrophic collapse.
As they turned tail to run, much of the Skaven lived to fight another day. Unfortunately, the losses sustained by their Chaos allies were formidable and there was always the problem with supply shortages for a force so far from friendly lines. The defeat at Almagora and ingenious planting of misinformation in the Skaven lines proved decisive for absolute control of Estalia.
