Lizardman Showcase

As you may know by now, my Lizardman army is one of the few that have not been brought to completion in terms of having a "fieldable" army.  This is mainly because I always thought of them isolated over there in Lustria (their background isn't really conducive to fighting in the Old World) and Games Workshop has changed the army enough to make it difficult to collect.

I started with a hand-full of Slann models way back in 3rd Edition (they were D&D creatures) and still have the Slann Army list from the 3rd Edition book.  My biggest progress in the army came with the plastics in the 4th Edition boxed set, but then Games Workshop steered away from the Skink-based army with the 6th Edition lists.

I've come to terms with it by keeping all 2 lists (although the old Slann list is a bit more difficult to lay out in modern terms based on the current points system being used).  Never the less, it may make it to my table as a Far Eastern version of the Lizardmen.  In the meantime, I campaign based in the Southlands will continue to drive my Skink-based army and allow me to use some substitute models I purchased from RAFM many years ago.  In the meantime, on to the cobbled-together Showcase of Lizardmen:

Collection Statistics
407 Models

Largest legal force I could deploy fielding painted models:  885 points
Estimated Goal Force Strength:  5,000 points

Characters
Venerable Lord Kroak was picked up on EBay for cheap.  Not sure why I purchased it, since I don't think I will ever have the occasion to use the model or the character.  Perhaps it was a moment of weakness when I couldn't pass up the deal?  It's a nice model and I wouldn't mind stripping it and repainting it someday.  Maybe, when I get the other 4,000 done that still need paint...

My 5th Edition Slann Mage Priest was painted by Tim Murray.  I was uninspired at the time and he had all ready painted a Lizardman army for his brother.  It is mounted on a "template base" so that it ranks up evenly in a unit of Temple Guard or Saurus warriors.

Skink Priest

Another EBay pick-up, this Purple Saurus isn't anything special compared to other 5th Edition Saurus models, but the strange color scheme is well done, so I am opting to keep him in his original color to use as a unit Champion.

The Skink on the left is another EBay pick-up.  This model will probably become some sort of Skink Chief or Special Character, but I'll need to go back and review their profiles before making the commitment.  On the right is my first prototype for my unit of 5-lined skinks.  I paint a single model before committing to do an entire unit.  Regarding my skinks, I am basing them on real color schemes for Skinks in North America.  The 5-lined is a common form (complete with breakaway bright blue tail).  The rest of the unit will follow a similar lined or solid black pattern.

This banner bearer will probably become a unit standard for a Skink or Slann Cohort (if I choose to go with a Slann-based army in the Far East).  The model is a RAFM model in armor and the banner pole was modified for a hand-drawn banner inspired by artwork in the 3rd Edition army book (Slann Army).

Core Units
My first unit of Skinks wasn't based on any actual (real) color scheme and was simply a green with yellow/orange fins for contrast.  These are all plastic, short bow wielding models from the 5th Edition box.

These Desert Skinks are a common North American motif with tans and oranges.  I used some spotting on different models for a bit of variety.  Like most of the army, these were painted about 15 years ago.

The most recently painted unit are these Saurus with hand weapons painted a year ago.  I had a single green prototype and wanted t get the rest out of my work-in-progress bin.  However, since later Saurus models were out, I chose to change up a few of the weapons and many of the shields with newer skink and saurus shields for variety.  Most of my Saurus are a simple Snot Green washed with a brown ink wash.

Special Units
Along with the Mage Priest these Temple Guard are Tim Murray's other contribution to the army.  I have a few more to add (to bring the unit up to strength), but am not sure what paint colors he used.  Thus, it has deterred me from mving forward with expanding the unit since color-matching to a non-GW paint mix will not be fun.

My Terradons have been my favorite unit in the army for a long time.  With two primary sculpts, I chose to paint them as different species.  In both cases, I took the color scheme from various Dinosaur books.

Rare Units
My Salamanders have a mixed match of skink Keepers on them from a variety of sources.  I don't remember if I got these paint schemes from Dinosaur books or from the 5th Edition Lizardman Army book.
