The Estalia Campaign (2003-2006)

The Estalia Campaign was the first successful campaign I had launched in over 7 years, using it to keep the former customers of my store active in the hobby and the social circle.  The premise was a rebellion in Estalia (instigated by the powers of Chaos) and the arrival of various factions to quell the rebellion and keep the powers of Chaos from getting a foothold in the Old World.

The Map at the end of the campaign looked like this:

Originating with 11 players, the 2 Bretonnian players took advantage of the revenue generation from Magritta, the Capital, and deployed side-by-side on the south coast.  An alliance with the High Elves in the Southwest corner made for a comfort zone and a strong alliance.  The one Skaven player crossed over from Tilea via the Taranto Pass in the Southeast corner, but never managed to get any momentum going until striking a late alliance with Chaos.

On the North coast, 2 Dark Elf players deployed in the northwest, 2 Chaos players further East, 2 Empire players even further to the East.  The 2 Orc & Goblin players never got their act together, with one deploying in the south (alongside the powerful Bretonnian alliance) and the other squeezed into the northeast corner beside the Empire.

While most players expanded slowly and claimed territory, the Orcs & Goblins were quickly crushed by the Bretonnians in the south and Empire in the north.  Attempts to blockade Magritta by the Orcs & Goblins and, later, Chaos, became costly and these races made the grave mistake of giving up on the naval blockade.  From this point onward, the productive capability of the Bretonnians would go unchecked.  Conversely, the High Elves began blockading the Dark Elves to the north and an amphibious invasion of Diamanterra elimating one of the Dark Elf players.

Below are two pictures taken from one of the sea battles that fought for control of the waters around Diamanterra:

With the Orcs & Goblins falling so quickly to the Empire and Bretonnia, the powers of Chaos turned their attention on their closest threat in the north, the Empire.  A series of short battles and abbreviated siege at Vizcaya led to a climactic battle outside the walls of Alquezaro.  The fall of the Empire capital removed 2 more players from the campaign.

With the Empire removed from the North, the powers of Chaos began to fragment.  It was apparent that the Bretonnians needed to be dealt with, so Chaos began accumulating forces to establish a beach head in the south alongside the Skaven.  In the meantime, the Dark Elf spearhead as far south as Jaraiz and fought an epic battle on the River Guadariz where the Bretonnians had built a pontoon bridge.

Thwarted at the crossing, the Dark Elves returned northward and the force was gradually whittled down by constant attacks by High Elves.  Musas was a key battlefront as it was used as a High Elf beach head for their northern landings.

The Dark Elves stumbled, but refused to give up.  A landing was made near the High Elf HQ at Narja, but logistical issues prevented them from pressing the attack on the heavily fortified city.  They needed more reinforcements.

In the meantime, Chaos successfully landed forces in the south and linked up with the Skaven army there to press the attack on Almagora (originally a Goblin-held territory that went into the hands of the Skaven before they lost it in a siege).  It was now held by a combined force of Bretonnians and High Elves and would need to be turned if the forces of evil wished to continue on to Magritta, the Estalian capital.

Huge armies rallied around the city.  The Bretonnians planted some misinformation in the Skaven camp, which was used to cripple the assault.  Thinking they were wheeling around to a weakly defended part of the city, the Chaos army split and battered itself against the Northwest corner and the western gate.  Meanwhile, the Skaven sat idly waiting for the Chaos army to join them in the north.  Following the Chaos defeat in the earlier battles, the Skaven decided to go it alone against the northern wall.  The Bretonnian and High Elf defenders had ample time to move their forces from the west side of the city to the north and were able to fight off both armies handily.

With this resounding defeat in the south, the campaign ran out of time.  The forces of Chaos had a solid base along the north coast from which to operate and they were in the process of pushing southward through the mountains, rather than having to rely on the uncertainty of naval transport.  Never the less, with the Bretonnians virtually unchallenged, we called the victory in their favor.  Thus concluded the Estalian campaign.
