"What army should I collect?  Which units should I buy first?"

As a former store owner and long time Warhammer player I often get asked these questions.  Originally, I used the Army Showcase page to address these concerns, but have since decided to change the format and commit the Showcase specifically to showcasing my collection.  This page is the portal to a whole collection of new articles and pictures specifically directed at Collecting a Warhammer Army.

Under each tab you will find the following:
  • What kind of army is it?  What are it's strengths and weaknesses if I choose to collect it?
  • A 2,250-point Army List showing how I would build this army out for a balanced, tournament army.
  • The methodology to assemble the army.  Which units to buy first and how I would go about building it out to it's eventual 2,250-point level.

A second and just as interesting element added to this page is the Collector's Tournament Page.  Here, I will take 16 of the armies outlined in this section and pit them against each other in a tournament environment.  This will result in over 40 games to be played and considering I would like to do Battle Reports for many of them (at least the ones for the contending armies), it also means this section will take over 4 years to complete.  Therefore, my plans may be overly ambitious, but I would like to see how these armies actually flush out once I start matching them up on the table.

First and fore-most, we need to address the aspects I look at when building an army.  To build an effective army, there is a certain checklist you should refer to that insures you cover all your bases.  Even if this is not for a tournament, the idea is to have these models in your collection for casual pick-up games, campaigns and so forth.  Therefore, you may find there are times when I deviate from this checklist in favor of another unit just because it may not be wise to have "too much of these and not enough of those."

Check List for Building an Army

Click on the above link to access a PDF file that gives you the rules I tend to adhere to when building an army.  One very big exception, you will find, is for armies that are released as part of the Games Workshop boxed Edition set.  For the 7th Edition of Warhammer Fantasy, this is the Battle at Skull Pass set, which includes Night Goblins and Dwarfs.  It would be silly to purchase this boxed set and then not use the models within it as part of your army.  Therefore, you may find exceptions to my army builder philosophy when it comes to these forces.
